Horticultural Education Worker

Ecoworks delivers community environmental projects in Nottingham, primarily targeting those experiencing disadvantage, and has been providing environmental, educational and health promoting activities from our community allotment gardens in St Ann’s (the oldest and largest site of its kind in England) for 18 years.

In 2009, we were awarded 5 years funding by the Big Lottery Fund’s Local Food Fund to deliver a citywide project to help disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Nottingham to grow, access and eat more locally grown and affordable fruit and vegetables.

The project – FRESH Communities – now in its second year of delivery, expands FRESH (our established food production and training social enterprise – bringing people together across the city to create new fruit and vegetable gardens, and grow more food for themselves and each other, and contributing to our mobile food stall and box scheme.  We provide training in organic food growing to schools, community groups and groups of friends or neighbours, and source produce from a range of local growers and farmers for affordable distribution to disadvantaged people.

Due to the success and expansion of this project, we are seeking a new Horticultural Education Worker to join the team.  We are seeking a skilled grower with experience of teaching to train and support new and existing growing groups on our network.  You will co-ordinate, develop and deliver training and support programmes to assist groups to set up, maintain and increase production on fruit and vegetables gardens throughout Nottingham, and will recruit, train and support volunteers involved in this activity.

You will have significant past experience of growing fruit and vegetables organically, and of delivering educational activities to a diverse range of people, and you will share Ecoworks’ environmental and community development aims.  You will be used to working on your own initiative and managing your workload and time effectively, and have excellent interpersonal skills.

Selection Procedure:

Will be by application form and interview

Application deadline:  9.30am, Wednesday 9th June 2010

Interviews:  Will be held on Thursday 17th June.

At interview, you will be asked to deliver a brief interactive training session, using the interviewers as participants, as follows:

You are working with a group of residents (they do not know each other well) who live in a supported housing complex and do not have their own gardens.  A space has been provided in the grounds for them to work together to grow their own food.  You will deliver a 10 minute introductory training session, covering what you think is important for them to learn and consider when working together.

Please bear in mind that you may bring props, but the session will take place inside.  You will be judged on overall ideas, content and style, rather than accuracy of information about Ecoworks or the project.

The following downloads make up the application pack for the role.  If you have any further queries, please contact antony.dumskyj@ecoworks.org.uk.
